The Montalbano Centre for Responsible Leadership Development is proud to introduce Dr. Samantha ‘Sammi’ Dodson as an incoming Academic Fellow.
Dr. Dodson received her Ph.D. in Management at the Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah, and her research broadly focuses on how employees’ cognitions and emotions affect their interpersonal outcomes.
Specifically, Dr. Dodson’s current work addresses cognition and emotion as these phenomena relate to:
a) the causes and consequences of interpersonal distress (e.g., discrimination, sexual harassment) experienced by women and other stigmatized identities at work,
b) the social effects of abstraction related to gender stereotypes, and
c) understanding and alleviating suffering at work.
Prior to pursuing her graduate studies, Dr. Dodson graduated cum laude from Brigham Young University (BYU) with a Bachelor’s degree in Management, Organizational Behavior and Human Resources emphasis. She then went on to consult with over 40 organizations around the world. In this role, she worked with practitioners to collect experiential data from more than 50,000 employees, which informed change strategies to improve the employee experience.
We caught up with Dr. Dodson ahead of her arrival in Vancouver to discuss her new role.
How did the role with the Montalbano Centre come about?
I was drawn to apply for the job because of the people I would be working with and the work they do. I’m excited to be the first postdoctoral fellow at the Montalbano Centre.
What made you want to join UBC Sauder and the Montalbano Centre?
I was drawn to this role because the goals of the Montalbano Centre closely align with my values. I love that the faculty and staff associated with the Centre are seeking to make the world a better place through inspiring organizations and leaders to use their influence for good, and I hope that I can positively contribute to this mission during my tenure.
What elements of your research do you feel most closely align with the goals of the Montalbano Centre?
I believe that my research on how organizations and employees can improve outcomes for victims of sexual misconduct and gender discrimination aligns well with the Centre’s interest in promoting responsible leadership development.
What do you hope to achieve in the coming years with the Montalbano Centre?
I hope to be research-productive, build great connections and relationships, and develop my skills as a scholar.
What are you most looking forward to experiencing in Vancouver?
I’m very excited to move to such a diverse and beautiful city. I’m looking forward to experiencing the rich culture (especially the food!) and all the outdoor adventures the surrounding areas have to offer.
