UBC-SMEI Diploma in Marketing & Sales Management

Program overview

Timing

Students take one course per semester for a total of six semesters over three years. Classes meet Monday evenings 7-9pm from September to December and January to March. Each year of the program concludes with a year-end workshop, project presentations and banquet at the end of March/start of April.

Location

Classes are held at the Sauder School of Business, UBC, Point Grey campus, Henry Angus Building, 2053 Main Mall.

Program objectives

Graduates of the UBC SMEI Diploma in Marketing and Sales Management program will:

  • Develop and deepen skills in analytics, critical thinking, communication and leadership
  • Gain confidence in strategic thinking and practical problem-solving
  • Be able to immediately apply classroom instruction for professional work situations and career advancement
  • Grow professional networks through networking opportunities, industry connections and working with like-minded individuals

Teaching method

Courses are taught using the case-method approach in which students are exposed to real-world case studies and best practices. The learning is hands-on, applied, and industry-relevant. The program is highly interactive. Students participate actively in class discussion and are encouraged to share how their experiences relate to the course concepts. Group work also plays a central role as students work in teams on a project for each course. The learning is focused on developing the student’s real-world application of tools, concepts and industry best-practices.

Workload

The program is designed with a workload requirement equal to an advanced level university course. Each year of the program contains three major activities: class sessions, projects/assignments, and workshops. While time commitments vary widely with students’ backgrounds and time of year, many report that an average of four to five hours per week of preparation are required for each activity. A significant proportion of the preparation time is conducted in study groups and group membership is required.
