The University of British Columbia has ranked first in Canada and 26th in the world in the Business Administration category of the influential Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) for 2020.

Also known as the Shanghai Ranking, the ARWU is one of the most widely-observed university measures, alongside the Times Higher Education and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) university rankings.

The ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects involves a survey of top global universities in 60 subject areas. Each subject is evaluated by indicators such as the number of papers authored by an institution in an academic subject, the number of staff who have won significant awards, the percentage of internationally-collaborated papers, the number of papers published in top journals and the average impact of papers authored by an institution.

UBC has ranked first in Canada in the Business Administration category of the ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects since 2017, the first year of this ranking in its current format.

The ARWU ranking further reinforces the strength of UBC’s individual programs on a global scale. Earlier this spring, the QS World University Rankings by Subject ranked UBC first in Canada and 40th globally in the Business and Management category, second in Canada and 33rd globally in the Accounting and Finance category, and first in Canada and 22nd globally in the Economics and Econometrics category.

UBC also recently secured the top spot in Maclean's 2020 ranking of the best business programs in Canada, a position it has held for three consecutive years.
